Update your Yahoo! Store’s Copyright Dates

I was tooling around on the internet this weekend (surprise, surprise!) and was alarmed by the number of sites that have outdated copyright notices at the bottom of their pages. I know, it’s not the first thing on everyone’s mind on January 1st, but, it’s March now. Time to make the move if you haven’t.

In my opinion, having an outdated copyright is the very first indication that a site may not be all it is cracked up to be. Seriously, if the owners of the site can’t even update the date once a year, do I really trust that the rest of the content is up to date? Yes, there are a number of other factors to look at on a site to judge their competency, but copyright is a personal pet peeve of mine and I’m sure I’m not alone. It’s not hard, so just go in and edit your dates.

If you are not sure where to look, there are a few places to check. Head to your Variables tab and look for either “Copyright” “Final Text” “Footer” or variations on that theme. If you have a custom store, your copyright may be in a different location due to developer preferences. Take 5 minutes, find your outdated copyright and change it from 2008 (or 2005, 2006 or 2007) to 2009.

Do yourself a favor too. Right now, go into your calendar and make a reminder for January 15th (it a Friday!) and set an appointment to update your copyright. Then 10 months from now, don’t close the reminder until it’s done.
